Despite the fact that certain Social Security disability claims can be completed online, the majority of claimants tend to commence their claims by calling the Social Security Administration’s toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213. Also, if preferable, claimants can setup an appointment to visit a local Social Security office in order to fill out an application in person. At that appointment, claimants are asked for basic information that is then used to complete a computer-based application form that will be printed (along with other forms to be completed) and signed by the claimant.

At both the initial and reconsideration levels for disability claims, the Administration does not attempt to make medical determinations of disability. Claims are referred to a state governmental agency that contracts with the Administration for determining disability. Typically, a medical doctor and a layman (called a disability examiner) at that state agency will assess the claim, and then the Social Security Administration accepts the determinations that are made at these two levels. For more information about how the initial and reconsideration processes work, you should contact a Jacksonville Social Security disability attorney to assist you.

If claimants are unhappy with the outcome of the initial determination, they may choose to appeal. ┬áIn the majority of states, this appeal is a request for reconsideration. In a few “prototype” states, which includeAlaska,Alabama,Colorado,Michigan,Louisiana,Missouri,New Hampshire,Pennsylvania, and portions ofCaliforniaandNew York, the Administration is conducting an experiment with regard to completely getting rid of the reconsideration step. In these states, the claimant will appeal an initial denial by directly requesting a hearing.

Keep in mind that if a claimant asks for reconsideration, a different set of people will make the reconsideration determination, but the outcome will likely be the same. Very rarely do reconsideration determinations result in an award of benefits. Once you have been denied at the reconsideration level, the next step is to ask for a hearing in front of an administrative law judge.
